Reviews for The Dukes of Hazzard (#1537)

Review by The Dean of Games on 01 Mar 2010 (Rating: 4)

1985 Elite (UK)

If this game wasn't so difficult it would have been great. I love the graphics, the colours and the overall fell of the game.
In a way it is accurate with the original 80's TV show, the characters are all there in their cars. But I would have liked to see them outside their machines. Particularly Daisy! But hey, the main theme of the series was about cars, so there isn't much to complaint about that.
It's one of those games that brings me back some very happy memories. For me it is an absolute classic.

Keys:

M =accelerate (hit repeatedly)
Z=fire
X=Jump
;=change lane

The Dukes of Hazzard may not be the best Spectrum game but there is some bizarre and appealing side about it.

It brings many memories back to my mind and most of them are really nice.

The graphics are quite solid and the screen presentation is very neat -which I like- .

May the Dukes of Hazzard be considered a cult game ?? I leave the question open ...

I must say never liked the TV series this game is based upon, but my judgement is not influenced by this. The Dukes Of Hazzard is a frustrating and dull race game, with some bland shoot-em-up features patched on, where you have to drive the General Lee through an obstacle-ridden course viewed from the right-hand side. Graphics and sound are unremarkable, and gameplay soon reveals to be boring and unrewarding. I'd turn to another channel if I were you.

Man, this is mean crap, I tell you. You can't even properly drive your car, you just can make it change side of the road, jump and shoot I-don't-know-what.
And anyway, when you jump you're probably going to crash against the helicopter. Or, if you manage to dodge the helicotper, you'll land on Boss Hogg's car, which in the meantime positioned under yours. And if you change side of the road while the helicopter while it's dropping some nails or I don't know what, you're going to crash disastrously against them even though they're supposed to be still in the air, at that point. Crappy crap, man. Nothing to see here. And it's so terribly slow that it looks like you're driving a pedal car. Jesus Christ. The graphics are not that bad.

Good graphics and frustrating, bad gameplay. Pressing M repeatedly to accelerate, making the helicopter such a regular presence, and the lack of variety (I was longing for a bridge to jump from whilst Rosco drove into the swamp), prevent what should have been a superb licence from being fun.
No yee-hah here.
