Reviews for Havoc (#2252)

Review by dandyboy on 18 Nov 2011 (Rating: 3)

This could have been a great game if it wasn´t so short !!

The concept is quite attractive if not totally original, the ship is cute, the movements are smooth, the setting is quite impressive ... but it has so few options that you will end up bored pretty soon.

It could have been great but it is only an average title . :(

Fond memories of the early days of the Speccy come to my mind when I see this .

I was expecting a much slower and jerkier game. Instead, despite its limitations, Havoc is fairly playable.
There is enough action and firing power to keep you entertained for awhile, specialy if you are a Zaxxon lover and want to play different speccy versions.
The monochrome scheme is understandable in a game like this, but a bit annoying sometimes, particularly because when an enemy ships cames close to a wall it becames almost invisible.
Its not a work of art by any means, the graphics are ugly, and so much could be improved, but its not as bad as I was expecting. I cant remember a better version before the proper conversion one year later, so I think it deserves an average rating.

All right, so Zaxxon - the official conversion - was passable, but not great on the Spectrum, due to slow movement and sometimes messy graphics.

However, this mediocre clone of it is much worse. Bland monochrome graphics, almost no sound and dull action.

I'd stick with Zaxxon instead, even with its limits.

Manage to create a better 3D isometric scrolling than your average Zaxxon clone of those years, but the game is subpar - the colourds are confounding - the enemies, once shot, stands there in mid-air with a spray of pixel over them, and the crates on the floor are still lethal after being shot. The low average vote on WoS is justified [4.27 from 15 votes]. It costed money too.
