Reviews for 3D Monster Maze (#28617)

1982 J.K. Greye Software (UK)
by Malcolm E. Evans

This is one of the earliest 3D maze games ever written and probably the first for the Speccy, the ZX81 that is.
The game was written by the famous author of the classic Trashman and sequel, who was already in his forties by then, when he started messing about a Speccy model.
He was the main programmer in J.K.Greye software house. When he left the company to found New Generation, the company must have folded.
Nevertheless, the company had a bit of success mainly due to 3D Monster Maze, which to this day is still one of the best regarded 3D maze games written.

The story line is simply: escape from a 3D maze where a T-Rex roams. The explanation is given in the beginning by an astonishing animated host composed of graphic blocks, and propels the player into an encounter with horror.
Remember this was 1982, few games were available, so imagine the feeling a child would have, when face to face with a big Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Technically the game is very well written, smooth, and without any bugs and quite a feat for 1982 and the limited ZX81 16K.
