Reviews for Asterix and the Magic Cauldron (#290)

Although cute in its graphic presentation this videogame still lacks something to become a winner . I don´t know what is it but the game doesn´t quite work in spite of its apparent virtues .

I always preferred tintin to asterix so my opinion about this title may be biased in a negative way , nevertheless , still worth a try . just wandering around the village chasing wild boars is enough fun .

Never got much into this one. The characters are well detailed and nicely animated and the playing area is colourful and full of detail. Punching your away thru is also cute for a while.
But the gameplay is the big letdown. You must find the cauldron pieces, keep Obelix well nourished with wild boar(!) and fight or avoid romans and boars. It is easy to get stuck somewhere, a tree, a house, etc, and sometimes that means aborting and starting all over again!
The pauses between screens also spoils the games dinamic, but if you are used to text adventures you will be fine with that.
May be interesting to fans of the books, and to those who apreacciate the humor touches, but I'm guessing not for long.

Poor game that mixes adventure and fights. You are Asterix, the brave gaul warrior and must search some cauldron pieces along a colourful map (maybe the only cool thing this game has) fighting enemies with the help of your inseparable friend Obelix. Beautiful backgrounds that are extremely slow to be drawn, as in many text adventures, spoiling the gameplay.

Another game based on a great story (Asterix's been one of my fave comics ever) that could have given many posibilities to release a succesful game but this time failed. Not the best game from Melbourne House, definitely. Dissapointing.

You control Asterix, constantly followed everywhere by his outsized friend Obelix, and you must retrieve the five pieces of the magic cauldron littered among forests, villages and roman camps. You're going to need mapping, and fighting romans and even wild boars, of which Obelix is particularly avid. The background graphics are simply beautiful, in a full-bright cartoonish way, although they took a while to drawn, almost like in homemade adventure game. The game is playable enough, but you can get stuck between the scenery and Obelix, without being able to wiggle out of them [press R to abort the game]. No sound. Overall, I don't think it's bad.
3/5

I always loved how scenes are built in this game. It's slow, but somehow makes me feel more immersed. Dunno why.

Yet the game itself is quite boring. I really wish to have a deep non-linear adventure with good puzzles build on this engine (with the graphics of the same quality, i mean).

'Asterix and the Magic Cauldron' on the other hand, is a game that, being excellent, carries some problems. I was about to rate it a 4, but I think it narrowly falls into the category of 5.

... the redrawing of the screen is not dramatic although I suppose that its main attraction (the Asterix and Obelix universe) gives it many more kudos than usual
