Reviews for Moon Buggy (#3273)

Review by Stack on 01 Oct 2013 (Rating: 2)

There are two games called Moon Buggy.

This one is a forgivable 1983 effort at mixing some Moon Patrol elements with some space invader elements. No scroll, just a wrap around screen with holes to avoid, and alien attacks from the side and above. The side attacks force you out of your comfort zone as they can't be hit every shot, flickering above and below your set projectory bullets.

Colourful enough simple shooter stylistically reminiscent of games like Arcadia, but with a touch more sprite flicker and poor collision detection.
Its this last defect that brings it down - so hard to know what a safe jump is, and plenty of bullets going through sprites - both in your favour and against.
The speed up at the end of a level adds tension though whether this is by accident (less sprites on screen) or design is hard to tell.

For an 1983 game this is quite decent. like user Stack already stated, the obvious comparisons with games like Moon Patrol or any Space Invaders are inevitable. It's a fun and addictive game, and the main letdown is the collision detection and the cars own movements limitation. It's hard to move from side to side with so many enemies firing at us, and the player, and I speak for myself, gets limited to a small area of comfort and avoids jumping as much as possible.

A colorful and very interesting game in which you command a lunar vehicle over the surface of the moon ... shooting at baddies and jumping over a bumpy soil .

Nothng very new but still interesting ...

3,5 / 5 .

This is quite good actually. It's playable, quite enjoyable and for 1983 you'd expect this to be worse than it is but it holds up quite nicely. It's difficult at first because there's no controls shows and WoS doesn't give you any so you are forced to learn them by yourself but once you do it can be a pretty pleasant game to play. The keys I learned to play best with are P for jump, L for fire, N for left and M for right. If you're here because you wish to complain about the controls I bet you're wishing you read this first. I also found it best not to jump on another platform unless it's necessary, for instance if the last enemy is only moving to the side and never to the centre you will have to move. Some of platforms are so narrow it makes moving to them pointless. That's why I don't give it a 4, otherwise this is pretty good and I enjoyed it.
