Reviews for Paperboy 2 (#3606)

Very disappointing sequel to the classic Paperboy. A good example of how sequels to classic games don't work. Nice graphics but difficult controls. Certainly not as good as the original.

Let's get the obvious out of the way first:
The graphics are as good as you can get them on the Speccy in this type of game.
The all-too-soon obvious is, however:
Fiddly controls take a lot of patience and getting used to.
But in the end it all pays off nicely.
Bottom line - good game and thus 4 stars.

I find this sequel basically more of the same, but with brighter colors, different baddies and obstacles, but also with the same mistakes all over again. Crash collision detection is again not the best, although a bit better than in the previous title. There is lots of color, which is always a good thing, but when dealing with a Spectrum, you must be extra careful, and a few bad decisions in the color attributes and placement, like the fences for example, spoils the game looks a bit. Overall, although Paperboy is a dear game of my youth, I think the sequel is slightly better.

If the screen view were wider this game would gain a lot ...

Was surprised at the low scores of this game, this was one of the first speccy games I bought and I always thought it was great, but I must be remembering the NES version because playing this again none of the good stuff is there. Can't cross road at your own free will, no stopping the garage robbers between the road, and the controlling is horrendous! I can remember being mortified loaning the tape to a friend with an amstrad (the B side of the tape was for the amstrad) and how much better the graphics were...ho hum!! But yes I can agree with others that compared to the original speccy version, this is bobbins!

It's another sequel and it's another lacklustre one. Paperboy was a fun little game that was quite faithful to the original arcade game, not the greatest conversion but playable and enjoyable, this lacks the same charm. To call this a shit sequel or one of the worst sequels ever is harsh, it's not, it's playable to a degree and more fun than Bomb Jack II, it's just the first one was a far better game. Within an instant you'll be preferring Paperboy to this, this looks nicer but it just isn't as fun. So it's not a terrible sequel but it's still not a good one. I guess if you never played Paperboy you'll get into this but it's very hard to prefer this to the original.
