Reviews for Potty Painter (#3850)

As a kid I used to spend hours playing beautiful coin-op machine called Amidar. This Spectrum game apparently tries to pretend it is Amidar on ZX Spectrum. Unfortunately it fails! First, it is completely unfinished since there are many nonsences that ruin it as a final product. First of all, in the bonus stage you often cannot land on the banana because your hero always miss it. Its movements are completely random unlike the coin-op game where you could predict how it will move downwards. I even tried all possible positions using "rollback" in emulator and the hero missed the banana in all combinations! Another fail is the 1st stage - the main enemy chases you directly so often that it ends up a nightmare just finishing that level without any harms. You certainly will run out of your "freeze them" rescue points that for some reason replaced the "jumps" found in Amidar (probably the poor coding abilities of the individual that brought out this game). The 2nd painting level is also not cleverly made. Instead of having to paint the squares continuously you can just go across the whole grid not having to worry about anyhing. The computer beeps when your "color meter" runs out but actually nothing bad happens. It starts over again and there is simply no reason to worry. So in the end you realize this game is completely unfinished with lots of serious bugs like non-functional bonus stage and idiotic game mechanism here and there. Controls are quite good but the problem is, this is not a finished game and definitely not something one should spend a single penny on. The author did a very poor job and deserves nothing but a big BOOOO!

This is one of those games I hold dear memories. Very funny characters. The game itself is rather limited when compared to it's arcade inspiration 'Amidar'.
But to anyone playing it for the first time in '83 and not knowing the existence of 'Amidar' or 'Painter', I think it would be rather enjoyable.
The graphics are funny and sweet, characters move smoothly. I was surprised with the "artificial inteligence" of the magenta nastie native in the yellow stages. He moves quite inteligently for an 1983 game.
I think it deserves a 3.

Amidar clone and honestly it's not too bad really, in fact this game is as close to Amidar as you can get on the Spectrum, I mean if you love Amidar this is worth a go.

A pretty decent old game from 1983 .

Potty Painter is fun and easy to play , really .

Avoid the baddies while you paint the screen , like in Oh Mummy .

Simple but fun !!

This seems like a straight-up decent Amidar clone but there are two problems I have with it. The first is the freeze button, it only seems to work when you are pressing no command buttons, which doesn't work well if you only have a split second between using it and surviving or not using it and dying. The second problem is the teddy minigame when you complete a level, the first time I played it it selected my route automatically, not giving me anytime to studynthe routes given to me and work out what's the best one to pick. Then when after completing level two I decided to just guess one out of random, and it crashed my game, poor teddy is left at the top of the screen waving his arms and crying for help but there's nothing that can be done, he is stuck there, forever, poor teddy. I was enjoying this, it plays nicely and it's responsive but these issues and this glitch spoil the fun intensely.
