Renowned for their arcade conversions and license deals, Elite perhaps went a step too far with this game. Boasting " technical assistance" from Dunlop Tyres, this rather simplistic scrolling 2D racer has very little going for it.

It's essentially just a rehash of their earlier game Grand National with the horses replaced by cars, but missing most of the subtleties that gave that some entertainment value. Driving down the debris strewn road is rather tricky, and you'll crash a lot before you get the hang of it. Even then, it's all too easy to trap yourself in a position where a crash is inevitable.

This was not one of Elite's finest moments and somehow I don't think the license would have sold many copies of this game either.

1985 Elite Systems (UK)

I got excited when I first loaded this in 1985. It is well presented with a few publicity remarks here and there to add color to the party but the game itself is nothing much.
The first big letdown is the obvious lack of speed. Every time I play this I'm always anxious to get the speed going and when it does it's below satisfactory. The other big complaint I have is about the static obstacles. They are well placed and the game it's hard on account of that, but becomes a tedious job after a few goes.
In all it's not entirely bad. It's challenging enough to keep you occupied for awhile. You need to keep track of each obstacle and that requires memory and planning ahead.
Feels relaxing enough, even hypnotizing once you now your way thru. At least I think it beats watching paint dry.

2,5 points

Not bad for its day although a bit unoriginal .

The screen is too narrow , it hinders playability .

2,5 out of 5 .

Ps - It reminds me of Spy Hunter almost too much !!

This had potential but that is quickly drenched by a lack of enjoyment due to a difficult course that's too unplesant to play over and over to complete. Not a fine game in the Elite archive.

Not much of a game really, it's too awkward to control and navigate through a largely unfair course. You get to choose your tyres, fuel and your engine but none of these seem to make any difference.

This race game starts with a bit of strategy, having an amount of money to spend in buying the kind of tires, petrol and others features of a car (aero dynamics, power brakes, etc). Then start the race (eight stages), with a smooth, vertical scrolling avoiding obstacles such as bushes, branches, tires and other stuff. Because of their position it makes it difficult to reach next level. And that difficulty makes this game very addictive. Good graphics & poor sound. I played it a lot back in the day.
