In 1988 Denton Design returned to the black and white 3D arcade/adventure style of The Great Escape, creating another masterpiece, wider and more complex, with four characters to control - all set in a story and in a environment that blends Conan Doyle's The Lost World with b movies.

IMHO, the best isometric game. Huge map, great history, absolutely atmospheric (from the loading screen it distilles a smell of "B series terror film")

Very good difficulty level, allowing you to explore quite a lot without being too easy to complete.

Good music (128k only), very good graphics, awesome script, a lot of "souvenirs" from terror and adventure movies (the rolling stones, the monster in the lake ...).

Awesome game.

I used to have wild fantasies about this game before trying it .

The game looks great but I never got hooked on it once I tried it . I must say .

Maybe it was too advanzed for my taste , I was only a kid of 10 back in 1988 !!!

'Where Time Stood Still' is one of those games punching way above the weight of the generation of machines it was programmed on, something that the 128K-only nature of the game makes clear. Rather ambitiously, this game throws the player into a large, varied open-world environment with an emphasis on exploring and staying alive; the latter being made more difficult by the fact that there are four members of the players party (with different personalities and skills) only one of whom is controlled at any time.

The emphasis on exploring and allowing the player to discover both the game world and its obstacles, the terrific atmosphere and the constantly-complaining party who need to be looked-after gives a rather cinematic feel to proceedings. This game feels like an adventure in the best sense of the word.

There are problems, though. There's the old-school difficulty level (characters can be killed very suddenly, notably by the infamous flying dinosaurs). There's also the graphics which vary wildly between pretty-good (the characters) and shoddy (the dreadful portraits; the poorly-drawn canyon and valley walls).

In spite of its faults, 'Where Time Stood Still' is a brave and overall successful attempt to push the boundaries of 8-bit software a little and, more importantly, use the abilities of the 128K Spectrum beyond just AY music.

For me this is one of the finest games on any system. Superb in every level. The music is also one of my favourites. Just magnificent.

I loved The Great Escape but it suffered from a steep learning curve. WTSS however is much more accessible. The story guides you, tutorial like, though the early stages, and before you know it your shooting dinos with the best of em. There were a lot of glitches unfortunately and it was frustrating to get stuck in scenery with no choice but to quit and restart. Still its easily one of the best games on the system and not to be missed.

I simple love this game.

In some respects it deserves the usage of a mouse (which I had not and probably the game was not prepared to it). The control is its weakest point, probably too advanced and complex for a spectrum user.

The plot is marvelous ( based in "The lost world") and the maps and graphics(even that only cyan, white and black, with different bright are in use) are excelent: dinosaurs, cascades, cliffs, many characters, huts... with a 2.5D isometric view that makes you feel you are inside the game

It looks like "The great Escape" also from Denton Designs.

The map is huge, and the characters really behaves differently, it is very difficult to end the game with the 4 characters.

In my TOP 5, and certainly a Spectrum and Atari ST classic.

Now, this is an absolutely above average game. An incredible (*) adventure very well structured and very well technically implemented.

Not one but several heros starring it.
Kudos to its programmers and interesting as few games achieved to be in the year it was published. Great work for the final years of the machine in all its merchandising abilities

(*)--> In all the sense of the word. It takes you to a strange world full of creatures typical of past times.

Where Time Stood Still is another one of those games that denotes a confluence of impressive talent and impressive artistic gifts.
In terms of appearance and presentation, it is reminiscent of Pyracurse or The Great Escape. That is, technically it bets on the difficult side. A merit without a doubt, although the objective of a video game is to entertain. But here you have that maybe it suffers a little to achieve it. Maybe cause there is an excess of artificial intelligence and some characters complains too much and make the story go slower than necessary.

All in all an intelligently developed game able to push the limits of the machine, albeit with a playability that sins of excess of sophistication.

Very Good game that tries to place us in a jungle after a plane crash.

It has its complicated facets however, as they say. Too bad they did not fully understood the problematic of that type of ingame interface and menu .
Back In its day, its cover full of testosterone helped him to become popular.
